Harshness of Reality

I was told that love can fill an ocean,
Sail a ship across the sea,
Fly a kite above the clouds,
Or solve life’s mysteries.

I was told that even words of love bring upon hope,
Mending broken fences every day,
Love is said to heal a tarnished heart,
Or drive the blues away.

I was told that love is the answer,
To questions we may have through time,
And that love is the only thing that matters,
That giving it up is deemed a crime.

I was told by the people around me,
As I journey through my life,
They never mentioned to me,
How love could cut me like a knife.

They forgot to mention that my heart could die,
That trust and faith would both be gone,
Or love could cause me to scream in pain,
When I was treated wrong.

They forgot to mention that love crushes,
Humans were agonized and broken,
Because they once believed in the lie,
When those three words were spoken.

The harshness of reality,
That love has brought to me,
Is bittersweet and locked away,
And needs no company.
